The difference between an appliance that lasts 8 years and one that lasts 15 years is almost always maintenance. Here are eight habits that extend appliance life significantly.
1. Clean Refrigerator Coils Annually
Dusty condenser coils make the compressor work harder. Vacuum them once a year — it takes 10 minutes and adds years to the compressor's life.
2. Never Overload Your Washer
Overloading stresses the drum bearing and motor. The drum should be no more than 3/4 full — clothes need room to move freely.
3. Clean the Dryer Vent Every Year
A blocked vent is the leading cause of dryer fires in the US. Hire a vent cleaning service or do it yourself with a long brush kit — once per year.
4. Run Your Dishwasher's Self-Clean Cycle Monthly
Run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner tablet or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack. This dissolves mineral build-up that blocks spray arms and reduces pump efficiency.
5. Use the Right Detergent — Correct Amount
HE washers require HE detergent in small quantities. Too much detergent creates excess suds that the machine has to work to clear, stressing the pump and causing mould in the drum seal.
6. Don't Slam the Oven Door
Oven door hinges are under constant thermal stress. Slamming accelerates hinge wear and can crack glass. Close it gently.
7. Clean the Fridge Door Gasket Quarterly
Wipe the door seal with warm soapy water every few months. A clean, supple gasket seals properly; a dirty, cracked one lets warm air in and wastes electricity.
8. Level Your Washer and Dishwasher
An unlevel washer vibrates excessively, accelerating bearing wear. An unlevel dishwasher collects water in the wrong corner, stressing the pump. Check with a spirit level and adjust the feet.
